Our ethos
We believe future generations should enjoy the same environmental, economic and social benefits and opportunities we do today. And we understand that without drastic action to protect nature, the impacts of climate change mean this will not be possible.
Therefore, we will:
-
Support the urgent demand to plant trees
To mitigate climate change and repair damaged ecosystems, we must quickly plant more trees. Our environmentally friendly tree shelters protect young trees to help them establish quickly and boost survival rates.
-
Support the increasing demand for timber
The demand for timber is increasing globally. Our tree shelters help forest owners protect their valuable young crops and encourage strong early growth.
-
Reduce the environmental impact of plastic in our countryside
NexGen tree shelters provide a viable alternative to plastic. Their performance is equal to, if not better than, plastic shelters. And because they break down into food for micro-organisms, there is no need to collect, clean or recycle them.
-
Help sustain ethical industries through our supply chain
We will support the wool and cashew nut industries by providing them with a new market for materials which are often classed as waste.
-
Continue our research and development into new uses for our material technology
The material we developed is fully biodegradable and pH and ecotoxicity neutral. It is also strong and durable. Therefore, it has applications outside of forestry and can be used in other industries in place of plastic to help reduce their environmental impact.
-
Lead our industry in the development of best practice and new standards
Because our tree shelters are durable and last for five years (depending on location) before they start to break down, they meet the demands of foresters who need to protect their young stock until they can survive outside of a shelter. However, there is not currently a standard that provides a certification for delayed biodegradability. We’re working with Impact Solutions and the Sustainable Certification Group to develop a test protocol and certification scheme that recognises the longevity and biodegradability of our tree shelters.
B Corp
To help us achieve everything above, we are currently working towards B Corp certification with B Lab. B Lab is a nonprofit network transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet.
Certified B Corporations are leaders in the global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy. To achieve certification, we will have to:
- Demonstrate high social and environmental performance by achieving a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or above and passing B Lab’s risk review.
- Make a legal commitment by making our corporate governance structure accountable to all stakeholders, not just shareholders.
- Allow information about our performance measured against B Lab’s standards to be publicly available on our B Corp profile on B Lab’s website.
