British Wool: A sustainable choice for our tree shelters

Our Managing Director, Gary, embarked on four years of research to find the perfect material to create an eco-friendly, biodegradable and environmentally degradable yet durable tree shelter. He chose British wool, and for good reason, because, as well as supporting an amazing natural product and an important part of the UK farming community, wool is:

  • Biodegradable: Wool is 100% biodegradable.
  • Sustainable and Renewable: Sourced from the UK farming community, British wool represents a renewable resource that supports local industries while reducing our carbon footprint.
  • Durable and Versatile: Wool boasts remarkable durability, flexibility, and resistance to fire and water, ensuring our shelters stand strong against the elements.
  • Accessible: With a readily available supply chain in the UK, we can efficiently source British wool, reducing transportation emissions and supporting local economies.

Each shelter contains over 60% British wool.  We use lighter coloured wool in our tree shelters and hedging guards but can use darker wool in our vole guards. Because we use wool of a lower grade than that used by clothing manufacturers, we’re providing British sheep farmers with an exciting new market opportunity for their fleeces.

Around 20% of wool produced in the UK doesn’t make it to market. We hope to change that. In full production, we’ll use 156,000 square metres of British wool every month, making NexGen a significant user of British wool in the UK. The photos in this post show cleaned, processed and rolled wool in readiness for manufacture and tree shelters stacked ready for packing into our compostable bags to go out for further trials.

But our dedication to wool goes beyond mere material selection. We’re also proud to support the Campaign for Wool, and in 2020, we were delighted to receive an Innovation in Wool Award for our wool-based tree shelters. The Campaign for Wool was convened in 2010 by HM King Charles III, when he was The Prince of Wales. Launched to raise global awareness about wool’s unique natural, renewable and biodegradable benefits. It encourages collaboration between wool growers, major fashion designers, retailers, manufacturers, artisans, and interior designers. It also educates consumers on wool’s versatility and the endless ways it can be used, including everything from luxury merino knitwear to fire-retardant insulation. And now, our tree shelters!
